As a reminder in 2007 legislation came into force that made it compulsory for all fishery owners to make a return of all migratory fish caught on their fishery to the relative District Fishery Board within 28 days of their requesting this information. Failure to comply with this legal requirement can result in a fine on proprietors of £2,500 per beat.

While the Catch Return Legislation only really affects Salmon, Grilse, Seatrout and Finnock the Committee felt that following the necessity and cost of setting up a computerised reporting system it would be beneficial, especially from a stocking factor, to have Brown trout and Rainbow trout included.

It is important to again make the point at this time that notification of catch information is obligatory on all members and should take place within 48 hours of all catches being made. It is important that all members adhere to the catch reporting rule. The 48 hour reporting time has been set because it was considered all members should report their catches as speedily as possible lest they forget. Failure to do so is a disciplinary offence.

The Committee are at the present time considering extending the systems to allow more catch information to be gathered, for example allowing marked and unmarked brown trout to be reported separately.

Please also remember there is no requirement to report kelts or any fish under the catch limit.
