This guide has been compiled and designed to assist new and old members alike around the Club's Southesk Salmon Fishing’s, we trust that you will find the information and the maps useful and accurate enough to help find your way to your destination.
Brechin Angling Club currently lease two Beats on the river Southesk ,the Dalgety Beat and the Kincraig Beat, in total, the two Beats extend to around 4 miles of Double Bank fishing and can deliver some excellent sport throughout the season.
In the following descriptions and on the maps you will find "symbols" to help you determine Beat limits etc, we have also included a rating scale ranging from poor to excellent to indicate accessibility to, from and on the two Beats and a similar scale to express a rating to some form of fly fishing, no rating scale is included regarding Spinning as this method can be utilised to equal effect throughout the entire Salmon Fishing’s.
Please adhere to the rules of the Club and that of the "Countryside Code", please use only the designated parking areas, and remember you
MUST display your membership ID card within your vehicle during fishing on all Club waters!
DO NOT obstruct field gateways, and please pay particular attention to access via farmland,
DO NOT walk over any crops except grass, access via crop "Tramlines" is permitted, access from Bank to Bank via wading is also permitted.
STRICTLY NO BAIT FISHING PERMITTED
DALGETY BEAT. [FORMERLY MATRIX ACCESS = GOOD TO / FROM AND ON BEAT.
BEAT LIMITS = Fly-Fishing = VERY GOOD.
BEAT LIMITS =1- 2.
Referred to for many years locally as the "Matrix Beat", the recently renamed "Dalgety Beat" is again under control of Brechin Angling Club for the 2006 season, and as per last year, fishing on the Dalgety Beat for season 2006 is in partnership with Montrose Angling Club under the terms of a "subleasing" arrangement. Brechin Bridge(1) defines the upper limit to the Beat and the lower limit can be located at the lower end of Craig Poo1(2).
Along the length of the Beat named pools and streams such as the "Standard" The "Cuttie" The "Spootie" 'Birch h'a' and "Craig Pool", can be found, and can offer some great fishing from time to time throughout the season, if your into night time fishing for Seatrout the Dalgety Beat is well worth a visit too!
Parking areas for the Beat can be found at the south side of Brechin Bridge (A), and at the Stables (B) at the riverside, parking at the Stables is the usual, most central and the easiest starting off place for fishing on the Beat, to locate the Stables from Brechin Bridge follow Eastmill Rd along to Matrix Engineering Works, turn right just before Ewan G Milne (Welding) then follow the road down to Stables which are situated on the riverbank.
If necessary, parking and access to from the South Bank can be found at Dalgety Farm(C) which is situated approx 11/2 mile from Brechin Bridge on the Arbroath road (A933), locate the sign for farm then follow track down to any area below the old farmhouse, this point at (C) provides a route to/from Craig Pool, which can be fished to better effect from the South Bank. However, parking and access to/from the South Bank at (AN&(C) is only recommended during times of high water!
When conditions allow. It's much easier just to access the South Bank from the North Bank via wading the river! A short, strenuous access route to/from Craig Pool and the bottom end of the Beat on the North Bank can be utilised to from Crosshill Petrol Station(D) which is situated approx 1 mile east of Brechin on the Montrose road (A935), parking is behind the Petrol station, to access the river, walk over into the "wood" to the east side of the Petrol Station, then simply follow the path along the upper side of bank until Craig Pool is located.
KINCRAIG BEAT. ACCESS = FAIR TO/FROM. GOOD OH BEAT.
FLYFISHING = VERY GOOD AT TOP END, FAIR ELSEWHERE OH BEAT.
BEAT LIMRS=2-S.
Nicknamed "Smartie's Bear (derived from the former tenants, J&J Smart's of Valley Works, Brechin.) The Kincraig Beat 'kicks off' at the lower end of Craig Pool (2) and terminates at Kinnaird Dam (3). Directly below Craig Pool on the North Bank, a session of fishing begins on a lovely stream that gradually "tail's off' into the slower reaches down and around the 'Red Brae's", a table and bench can be located on the riverside here! beyond this point the river becomes a little more "sluggish" in it's flow and In close proximity to Kinnaird Dam the river deepens out and becomes progressively more "muddy" underfoot, as a consequence this makes wading and fishing much more difficult ,however, with a little care, access into the river on this part of the Beat can be done in places, this part is rarely devoid of fish from May onwards!
Although fishing is permitted on both Banks of the Kincraig Beat, the South Bank by nature is pretty much inaccessible for fishing and therefore is not recommended! Access to/ from the Beat can be gained at (D) (as per described in Dalgety Beat Script) or at the more commonly used parking area(E) situated below Kincraig Farm, to locate(E) Exit Brechin onto the Montrose road (A935),t he entrance to Kincraig Farm is located
approx 1/4 mile beyond Crosshill Petrol Station, just to the right hand side of the first ,sharp left hand bend on (A935), once Farm is located you will find, approx 50m prior to Farmhouse and to your right, a closed "locked" Barrier or open Barrier (Please leave Barrier as you find it!), pass through Barrier, veer to the left down track to "Deadend" at field adjacent the river, Please park off track,
DO NOT OBSTRUCT FIELD GATEWAYS!
To access the Beat from Parking area (E), If the field is "In Crop", you MUST walk to the riverside via the perimeter of the field, or, if suitable use "Tramlines", under NO circumstances walk over any growing crops except grass!
Keys for the lock on the barrier at Kincraig Farm can be purchased from Newsplus, Newsagents, Swan St, Brechin. Keys cost £5.00 each, which is refundable on return at any time, the keys are also Loch Saugh Boat-House compatible!
